The Resurrection

And is it at all possible that Rahmān ar-Rahīm —Who makes Himself known to man, makes Himself loved by him, and shows His mercy to him— would not grant eternal happiness and prepare no place of reward for the believers who recognize Him through their īmān, love Him through worship and thereby make themselves beloved to Him, and honor Him with gratitude?

The Third Truth

The Gate of Wisdom and Justice: The Manifestation of the Names al-Hakīm and al-Adl

Is it at all possible that^[1] Dhāt-i Dhul-Jalāl, Who demonstrates the majesty of His dominical sovereignty from the atoms to the stars through wisdom and order, justice and balance, would not reward the believers who seek refuge beneath the protective wing of His dominicality and who, through their faith and worship, act in accordance with His wisdom and justice? Likewise, is it at all possible that He would not punish the unbelievers who, through their denial and rebellion, oppose His wisdom and justice? Yet in this transient world we see that not even one thousandth of what His wisdom and justice require with respect to mankind is carried out. Most of the people of misguidance leave this world without punishment, while most of the people of guidance depart without receiving their reward. This shows that everything is deferred to a Supreme Tribunal and an abode of ultimate bliss.

Indeed, it is plainly evident that the One who governs this universe conducts all things with infinite wisdom. Do you seek proof? It is that He takes into account the benefits and purposes found in everything. Observe how countless instances of wisdom and benefit are found in every limb, organ, bone, vein, and even every cell of the human body. Some organs contain as many manifestations of wisdom and benefit as there are fruits upon a tree. All this clearly demonstrates that everything is fashioned by the hand of an infinite wisdom.

Furthermore, the extraordinary order found in every created thing shows that everything is brought into existence through infinite wisdom. Indeed, the precise programme of a beautiful flower compressed within its tiny seed, and the life history, record of deeds, and index of equipment of a mighty tree inscribed within its minute seed by the pen of Divine Determining, all bear witness that the pen of an infinite wisdom is at work.

Moreover, the exquisite artistry displayed throughout creation shows that everything is the work of an infinitely Wise and Artful Maker. Indeed, the fact that the whole universe has been placed as a miniature index within the tiny body of man, that he has been entrusted with the keys to all the treasuries of Divine mercy, and that he serves as a mirror to all the Divine Names, demonstrates that the most refined artistry contains the most profound wisdom.

The phrase "Is it at all possible that...?" is repeated frequently because it expresses an important mystery. Indeed, most unbelief and misguidance arise from considering the truths of faith to be improbable, irrational, or impossible, and consequently denying them. In this treatise, however, it is demonstrated with certainty that true improbability, true impossibility, true irrationality, and even difficulties reaching the degree of impossibility lie on the path of unbelief and misguidance. By contrast, the path of faith and the highway of Islam are characterized by true possibility, genuine rationality, and an ease that approaches necessity. In short, the philosophers of unbelief deny the truths of faith because they regard them as improbable and impossible. This treatise, through the repeated phrase "Is it at all possible that...?", demonstrates where the real impossibilities lie, thereby delivering them a resounding slap. ↩︎
