THE FLASHES
The Seventh Flash
For example, men such as Khālid ibn al-WalīdA prominent Companion of Prophet Muhammad (saw) and renowned military commander, known by the title Sayfullāh, the Sword of Allah., a genius of warfare, and Amr ibn al-ĀsA Companion of Prophet Muhammad (saw), military commander and statesman who played an important role in the early Islamic conquests and served as governor of Egypt., a genius of politics, who could not accept defeat, were defeated by the Qur’anic sword that manifested itself through the Treaty of HudaybiyyahA peace treaty concluded in 628 (6 AH) between Prophet Muhammad (saw) and the Quraysh of Mecca at Hudaybiyyah, establishing a truce between the Muslims and the Quraysh.. After they came to Madinah al-Munawwarah“The Radiant City”; the city to which Prophet Muhammad (saw) migrated from Mecca and where his mosque and tomb are located. in complete submission and surrendered themselves to Islam, Khālid became Sayfullāh“The Sword of Allah”; a title given by Prophet Muhammad (saw) to Khālid ibn al-Walīd in recognition of his military leadership., the Sword of Allah, and a sword of the Islamic conquests.
An Important Question: What was the wisdom behind the Companions of the Noble Messenger (saw)—the Pride of the Worlds and the Beloved of the Lord of the Worlds—being defeated by the polytheists at the end of UhudA mountain near Madinah and the site of the Battle of Uhud, fought between the Muslims of Madinah and the Quraysh of Mecca in 625 (3 AH). and at the beginning of HunaynA valley near Mecca and the site of the Battle of Hunayn, fought in 630 (8 AH) between the Muslims and the tribes of Hawāzin and Thaqīf.?
The answer: Among the polytheists were many men such as Khālid who, in the future, would come to stand alongside the prominent Companions of that time. In order not to severely wound their pride, in view of the glorious and honourable future that awaited them, Divine wisdom granted them in advance a reward for the good deeds they would perform in the future and did not completely crush their pride.
In other words, the Companions of the past were defeated by the Companions of the future, so that those future Companions would embrace Islam not out of fear of the flashing sword, but out of eagerness for the radiance of the truth, and so that their courage would not be humiliated.
Thus, the Companions of the past were defeated by the Companions of the future, so that those future Companions would enter Islam not out of fear of the flashing swords, but through zeal for the flash of truth, and so that their innate courage would not suffer deep humiliation.
The Third Aspect
لَا تَخَافُونَWithout fear
Through the phrase “without fear,” it gives the following news: “You will perform tawāfThe act of circumambulating the Ka'bah seven times as an act of worship. around the Ka‘bah in complete security.” Yet at that time, most of the Bedouin tribes of the Arabian Peninsula were hostile, and the region around Mecca, as well as the greater part of the QurayshThe Arab tribe of Mecca to which Prophet Muhammad (saw) belonged. tribe, were enemies. Despite this, the verse foretold: “In the near future, you will perform tawāfThe act of circumambulating the Ka'bah seven times as an act of worship. around the Ka‘bah without feeling any fear.” This indicates and foretells that the Arabian Peninsula would be brought into obedience, that all of QurayshThe Arab tribe of Mecca to which Prophet Muhammad (saw) belonged. would enter Islam, and that complete security would be established. And it took place exactly as it had foretold.
The Fourth Aspect
هُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَى وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِHe is the One Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, so that He may make it prevail over all other religions. — The Qur’an 48:28
gives, with complete certainty, the glad tidings that the religion brought by the Noble Messenger (saw)Sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam (Peace and blessings be upon him) would triumph over all religions. Yet at that time, Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism were the official religions of world powers such as Rome, China, and Persia, each of which ruled over hundreds of millions of subjects. Muhammad the Arab (saw)Sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam (Peace and blessings be upon him), however, was not yet in a position to prevail fully even over his own small tribe.
Despite this, the verse foretells, in the clearest and most certain manner, that the religion he brought would triumph over all religions and prevail over all states. The future confirmed this news when the sword of Islam extended from the Indian Ocean in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west.
