THE FLASHES

The Thirtieth Flash

And consider especially our ship, the earth. In a single year, it traverses an orbit equivalent to a circle of twenty-four thousand years. Yet despite its extraordinary speed, it neither scatters the things placed and arranged upon its surface, nor shakes them loose, nor hurls them into space.

If its speed were to increase or decrease even slightly, it would fling its inhabitants into the air and scatter them through space. And if it were to lose its balance for even a single second, let alone a minute, it would throw our world into disorder, perhaps collide with another planet, and bring about a cosmic catastrophe.

Moreover, the merciful balances governing birth and death, nourishment and sustenance among more than four hundred thousand species of plants and animals upon the face of the earth demonstrate the existence of the One Who is Just and Merciful as clearly as the sun reveals its light.

In particular, within every individual of each of those countless species, the limbs, organs, and faculties are so precisely balanced and harmoniously related to one another that their proportion and equilibrium clearly demonstrate the existence of the Just and All-Wise Creator.

Above all, the cells of every living body, the blood vessels, the blood cells, and even the particles composing those cells display such a delicate, precise, and wondrous balance that they demonstrate beyond doubt that everything is nurtured and governed according to the measure, law, and order of the One Just and All-Wise Creator.

He is the One in Whose hands lie the reins of all things, with Whom rest the keys to everything, for Whom nothing obstructs anything else, and Who governs the whole of creation as easily as a single thing.

Whoever considers it unlikely, and therefore refuses to believe, that the deeds of human beings and jinn will be weighed on the supreme scales of justice in the Great Court of the Hereafter would surely abandon that doubt if he carefully contemplated this all-encompassing balance, which he can witness with his own eyes in this world.

O wretched human being, wasteful, unjust, and unclean!

Because you fail to observe the principles of frugality, moderation, cleanliness, and justice—which govern the movements of the entire universe and all beings—you arouse their spiritual aversion and indignation by acting in opposition to the whole of creation.

What do you rely upon that you dare to provoke the indignation of all beings through your injustice, lack of balance, extravagance, and uncleanliness?

Indeed, the all-encompassing wisdom of the universe, arising from the supreme manifestation of the Name al-Hakīm, operates according to the principles of moderation and the avoidance of waste, and enjoins frugality.

And the perfect justice prevailing throughout the universe, arising from the supreme manifestation of the Name al-Adl, governs the balance of all things and commands human beings to act justly.
