THE FLASHES

The Third Point

Through His Names al-Hakam and al-Hakīm, the All-Powerful Creator has encompassed thousands of orderly worlds within this universe. And within those worlds, He has created the human being—who is most receptive to the wisdom manifested throughout the universe—as a centre and focal point.

Within the sphere of the universe, the most important instances of wisdom and benefit are directed towards the human being. And within the human sphere, He has made sustenance a central concern, for most of the wisdom and benefits of human life are connected with sustenance and become manifest through it.

Within the human being, through consciousness and the pleasure accompanying sustenance, the manifestation of the Name al-Hakīm becomes radiantly apparent. Through human consciousness, hundreds of sciences are discovered, and every science, within its own field, describes a manifestation of the Name al-Hakam.

For example, if medicine were asked, “What is this universe?” it would undoubtedly answer: “It is an immense pharmacy, perfectly ordered and complete, in which every medicine has been carefully prepared and stored.”

And if chemistry were asked, “What is this globe?” it would reply: “It is a perfectly ordered and complete chemical laboratory.”

Mechanical engineering would say: “It is a perfect factory, without a single defect.”

Agricultural science would say: “It is an exceedingly fertile field and a perfect garden, in which every kind of crop is produced at its appointed time.”

The science of commerce would say: “It is a perfectly ordered exhibition, a well-organised market and a shop in which goods have been fashioned with extraordinary artistry.”

The science of food provision would say: “It is a perfectly ordered storehouse containing every kind of food.”

The science of sustenance would say: “It is a Divine kitchen and a cauldron of mercy, in which hundreds of thousands of delicious dishes are prepared simultaneously and in perfect order.”

Military science would say: “The earth is a military camp. Every spring, more than four hundred thousand different nations are called to arms anew, and their tents are pitched across the face of the earth. Although they belong to a single army, each has its own food, clothing, weapons, instructions and discharge from service. All this is governed in perfect order, without error, confusion or forgetfulness, through the command, power, mercy and treasury of a single Supreme Commander.”

And if the science of electricity were asked, “What is this universe?” it would certainly say:

“The roof of this majestic palace of the universe is adorned with countless electric lamps, arranged in perfect order and balance. These heavenly lamps—some of which, like the sun, are a thousand times larger than the earth—are so wondrously ordered and balanced that, although they burn continuously, they never lose their balance, explode or cause fires. Yet their consumption is limitless. Where, then, do their supplies, fuel and combustible materials come from? Why are they never exhausted? Why does their burning remain so perfectly balanced?
